Mount Meron - Safed

Meron
At 1,209 meters, Mount Meron is the second highest mountain in Israel.
Situated in Northern Israel it is here on the slopes of the mountain that the tomb of Shimon Bar Yochai is located as well as the adjacent burial cave of Rabbi Hillel the elder, both close to the village of Meron.
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai was the author of the Zohar (The foundation of Mystical thought known as the Kabbalah) and a rebel against Rome. His tomb draws many Jewish pilgrims particularly on the Jewish holiday of Lag Ba’Omer when tens of thousands of people make their way to Mount Meron for the purpose of prayer and celebration.
Lag Ba’Omer falls in the middle of the somber seven weeks that start with Passover and end with Shavuot (Pentecost), and it has become traditional for bonfires to be lit throughout Israel
There is also a rock cut synagogue at Meron dating from the last part of the third century with doorways that face Jerusalem.
