Christmas activities in the Holy Land
For those wishing to spend Christmas in Israel they will find that it is an enchanting and meaningful experience to be in the Holy Land where the Christmas story took place. Christmas is celebrated mainly in Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem as well as other major cities across Israel.
There are a variety of events that take place over Christmas in the Holy Land.
Christmas markets are open in various cities - in Bethlehem there is a Christmas Bazaar that features traditional Christmas lights and decorations as well as crafts, games, food and drinks. For the festive season Bethlehem’s old city is specially lit up and decorated.
The Latin patriarch in Jerusalem has a small Christmas Market that will operate until Christmas Eve. From December 18th for the first time famous life-size nativity scenes that are handcrafted in Italy and carved out in wood will be set up in both Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
The Christian Arab city of Nazareth has special celebrations starting on the 24th December with a parade and Christmas Eve mass at the Church of the Annunciation.
There are many other things to do in the Holy Land at Christmas, special Christmas concerts, carol singing and inspiring classical concerts in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and at Abu Gosh on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
Various Christmas celebrations in the Holy Land carry on until the 19th January when the Armenian Christmas is celebrated after the Orthodox Christian date of January 6th. The Armenian Christmas is celebrated with a fascinating motorcade procession from the Old City of Jerusalem to Bethlehem’s Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity.
