The city of Jerusalem has year round events and festivals.
Below are the highlights of some of the key events taking place in Jerusalem between January and June 2012.
On this day the planting in Israel’s forests and woods of thousands of young saplings marks the beginning of a new year for trees. All who are interested in taking part in this annual tradition are invited to make their way to Jerusalem Park.
Purim is probably the most enjoyable and amusing time of the year in Jerusalem with fancy dress costumes, exciting events and treats. These activities take place on a regular basis at the Alrov Mamilla Avenue and the whole city is absorbed in a party mood during the Purim holiday
March 6 - April 30
The city of Jerusalem is eagerly awaiting one of the world’s biggest Ice festivals. This will take place at the vast Old Train Station complex in the city and will include an ice skating rink, ice bar, dozens of outstanding ice sculptures and numerous other attractions.
Music Festival in the Old City
Although the alleyways of the Old City of Jerusalem are already laden with captivating charm, the Music Festival creates even more delight to the ancient cobbled streets. During this time ensembles will play throughout the area with unique presentations.
International Jerusalem Marathon
The Jerusalem Marathon of 2012 promises even more excitement than previously, with 15,000 participants expected including 1,500 arriving from other countries. There will be a number of events such as the three day Sports and Health Expo and a pre-run pasta dinner as well as other festivities. The Marathon track itself passes most of Jerusalem’s most famous landmarks and in this way combines sport with awe-inspiring views,
Christian Holy Week
Christian Holy Week commemorating the Passion of Christ starts on Palm Sunday (1st April) when pilgrims ascend Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives, re-enacting Jesus” entry into Jerusalem. April 6th (Good Friday, marks Jesus” journey up to Golgotha and on Holy Saturday (April 7) thousands of Christian pilgrims assemble at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Old Jerusalem ending Holy Week.
International Writer's Festival
This is part of the Jerusalem Season of Culture which takes place at Mishkenot Sha’ananim and officially starts in June when prominent local and international authors will convene for four days of friendly dialogue and workshops. This will include meetings with artists from varying genres. A number of these discussions will be in English while some will have simultaneous translation.
May 22 - June 10
The Israel Festival was founded in 1961 and is one of the country’s foremost cultural attractions. Offering a three week spectacular of magnificent theatre, dance and music that will take place at Jerusalem’s to venues who lend their stages to local and international performers who will delight audiences with their offerings. There will also be free performances of children’s shows, jazz and street theatre.
The work of the world’s greatest light sculptors will illuminate the streets and alleys of the Old City, major tourist sites and public spaces of Jerusalem. This year the annual light festival will host a special production of Verdi’s opera La Traviata. This will take place daily at the ancient site of Zedekiah’s Cave, during the duration of the festival. Also performing daily will be the renowned dance troupe Mayumana.
