Tanzania Gombo Tour Pilgrimage of Turkey, Egypt and Israel - October 2014
From September 29th – October 13th 2014 a group of 36 pilgrims from Tanzania toured Turkey, Egypt and Israel.
The first six days were spent touring Turkey beginning in Istanbul followed by visits to places of interest such as Canakkale, Izmir, the Roman city of Hierapolis as well as many others.
The pilgrimage continued to Egypt for three days with visits to the Pyramids, the Sphinx and other places of interest. Then the tour continued following the route taken by the Israelites more than 2000 years ago on their Journey to the Holy Land, crossing the Suez Canal and visiting the Monastery of St. Catherine and Mt. Sinai.
The group crossed into Israel via the Taba border crossing and travelled directly to their Hotel in Arad which was the start of seven days visiting places of interest in the Holy Land.
The next day started with a drive to the Dead Sea which is the lowest point on earth where they had time to float on the heavy water, then on the Qumran the site where the Dead-Sea Scrolls were discovered.
The group continued on to Jericho to visit the place of the Sycamore Tree where Jesus entered Jericho. This was continued by taking a cable car to see the Mountain of Temptation view point, for a panoramic view of the Jordan Valley and the site where Jesus spent forty days and nights fasting and meditating.
The following day was spent visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem. In Jerusalem the group enjoyed a panoramic view of the Old City from the Mount of Olives, then visited the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations. This was followed by a visit to Mt. Zion, the Tomb of King David and the Hall of the Last Supper. They then continued on to the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu and Mt. Moriah proceeding to the Old City and the pool of Bethesda, the Via Dolorosa and the Western (Wailing) Wall.
The afternoon was spent in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, visiting the Milk Grotto, The Church of Nativity and Shepherd’s Field. They returned to Jerusalem for overnight.
Day four in the Holy Land began with a visit to the Garden Tomb with Holy Communion before leaving Jerusalem to drive along the Jordan Valley to Tiberius and then proceeding to Cana for a visit to the wedding church which is the site of the Miracle where Jesus changed water into wine. They then continued on to Nazareth the place where Jesus grew up and visited the Church of the Annunciation and Mary’s Well, after which they returned to Tiberius for overnight.
After breakfast the next day the pilgrim group began with an inspiring Boat Ride across the Sea of Galilee to Kibbutz Ginnosar to see the 2000 year old Jesus Boat continuing on to the Mount of Beatitudes, Mount of Multiplication of Fish and Loaves (Tabgha), followed by a visit to Capernaum, the town of Jesus and St. Peter.
The sixth day began with a visit to Yardenit the traditional Baptism site on the Jordan River and in the afternoon they drove to Mt. Tabor which is place that Jesus chose to be the site of His Transfiguration.
The final day of their visit to the Holy land was spent visiting the ancient port of Jaffa with some free time for shopping before departure.
